Today was the first day of presentations by local high school students for the Outstanding Educators Awards Program. Today’s students are from New York Mills High School. Marie Mosca introduced seniors Nina Fellone and Holly Simon as well as school counselor Deb Ellis. Nina spoke today; Holly will speak at another upcoming meeting.

Nina indicated her desire to become an elementary school teacher because she likes to work with children and would like to give back to a profession that she has benefited from as a student. Nina’s activities include Student Council Class President and Executive President, Volleyball, Yearbook Club, Prom Committee, Chorus, Field Hockey, mentoring middle school students, and NYSCLSA Leadership Conference. Her awards include Student of the Month, Outstanding Leadership Award, and NY Mills Optimist Club Youth of the Month.

Program:
P Joe introduced Tim Reed who, along with Bill Keeler, started the Real Men Get Tested campaign to encourage men to get tested for colon and prostate cancer. Mr. Reed reported that 64,000 men die each year from the two cancers. The campaign, which ends Father’s Day, uses humor to educate people about the diseases and encourage discussions and testing.

Mr. Reed’s last words were, “Men, get tested!”
