GSE Team Readies for Great Adventure
]The future of the Rotary is in 10 hands.
Five Central New York professionals head to Japan next month for a cultural and vocational exchange and the experience of a lifetime. The Group Study Exchange (GSE), through Rotary International District 7150, includes Utica Rotarian Pam Matt as team leader, Cammi Clark of Syracuse, David Binns of Aurora, Jason Fazio and Cira Foster, both of Utica.
The CNY team leaves March 27 to ensure the team is in Japan for their district Rotary conference in April.
The four-week trip will allow for the team members to totally be immersed in the Japanese culture, customs and vocational fields. Each member will stay with a Japanese family, experience landmarks, exchange ideas and develop personal and professional relationships within their vocation. The trip will also allow group members to meet up with those from Japan who were part of a GSE team from Japans Rotary District 2640 to Central New York last year. As a team we can only hope to offer as much in this exchange as the priceless and invaluable opportunity the Rotary has entrusted in our hands, Matt said. Its an honor to be fulfilling the mission of Rotary.
About the team:
Utica Rotarian Pam Matt: Works as director human resources at Mohawk Ltd. For most of her career, she practiced law in the areas of employment, corporate and intellectual property. She is a member of the Rotary Club of Utica for two years and a member of its Board of Directors. Her passion has been the Youth Exchange. As a member of the Youth Exchange Committee, she has been involved with many of the activities for Inbound and Outbound students. In addition, she and her husband have hosted students from Hungary, Italy, Germany and Mexico. Last year, their middle child went to Germany on Rotary Exchange and another son is presently on exchange in Thailand.
Cammi Clark: An award-winning journalist from a major metropolitan newspaper currently serves as managing editor of the Scotsman Press for more than 20 weekly newspapers in addition to three online editions, a monthly magazine and Web site and serving as social media manager. Clark will be keeping the world up to date on the adventure via her blog with pictures and video throughout the duration of their trip. To keep up-to-date, visit www.cammiclark.wordpress.com
David Binns: The Finger Lakes native is president of Aurora Shoe Company. Binns has a degree in mechanical engineering from Clarkson University and formerly worked for Georgia-Pacific, Plattsburg.
Jason Fazio: The policy service specialist for The Hartford Insurance Company works with numerous small business owners throughout Central New York. He also assists in training new employees.
Cira Foster: A Cuban native came to the US in 1996. She has a degree in telecommunications and works at the Utica Public Library as an information technology specialist. She also teaches Web design and computer fundamentals.

Variety is the Spice of Rotary Life
A great benefit of Utica Rotary membership is the Friday programming brought to club members by our Program committee. I cannot think of any other local organization that can match our club in the consistent quality and quantity of outstanding presentations available to its members. We are introduced to the world through our exchange students, GSE teams, and other programs like Peter Vogelaar's recent report on his trip to Myanmar. World class performers come to the Utica Rotary stage thanks to Bob Mortis and the Munson Williams Proctor Arts Intstitute. We learn about cutting edge technologies; the presentation on stem cell research by Ron Kamp and the Masonic Medical Research Lab seemed like something out of a science fiction novel...but it's happening in our back yard!Of course our reputation as a fun club is well deserved. How many people can say that they were hip checked into a wall by Roller Derby queen Farmer Slaughter on their birthday? (If you answered Norma Montagnino Gemza to this question, then you receive attendance credit for last Friday).
Utica Rotary programs are at times educational, thought-provoking, entertaining, enlightening and controversial, and provide a large part of the value of membership in our club. Bob Mortis and the program committee deserve your thanks for the time and effort required to bring these presentations to Twin Ponds each Friday.

We Miss You When You're Out of the Picture!
If you're a Utica Rotarian who hasn't been to a club meeting in a while (and you know who you are), please come back to Twin Ponds on an upcoming Friday and renew your Rotary spirit and commitment to service above self. Our club is the best in the district, but we are stronger and can do more when all of our members are contributing to our success.
