Silent Ringers Overcome Oxymoron to Raise Big Bucks
Twenty five members of the Utica Rotary family took time from their holiday schedules to ring the bell (sort of) for the Salvation Army at Sangertown Square this past Saturday. For the day, $580.83 was raised. The clanging of the bell was replaced by the "Ding" and "Dong" signs that PE Jim Turnbull borrowed from Wile E. Coyote a few years back. Thanks to our volunteers (in order of appearance):Bart Gorman, Jeff Jones, Linda Allen, Larry Calabrese, Dana Jerrard, Sophie and Janos (Youth Exchange students), Jack Altdoerffer, Rick Holohan, Al Zangrilli, Al's son, Brymer Humphreys, Marty Brown, Sadieann Spear, Mike Van Strander, Greg Benincasa, Andy Alesia, John Wolff, Mike Evans, Dave Jones, Ingrid Jones, Noah Jones, Christian Jones, Darby O'Brien and Kevin Marken.

Utica Rotary Potpourri
* We Meet On Wednsday This Week - Our meeting this week is a joint meeting with New Hartford Rotary on Wednesday, December 23 at noon at Danielle's Banquet Facility, Seneca Turnpike, New Hartford. Come join our Rotary brethren and sistren (you can look it up!) for some holiday fellowship Rotary style.* Burdick Won't Shush About Schussing - There are but a few seats left for the January 28, 2010 Rotary ski trip to Gore Mountain, reports trip organizer John "Boards" Burdick. Click here for information about the trip and reserving your spot. Deadline to submit your $20 deposit to John is December 30.
* A Rotary International Reunion - One of the goals of Rotary is to build peace and understanding among countries and cultures around the world. The Youth Exchange program builds lifelong international friendships, and this was evident last Friday as Utica Rotarian Heather Mocksness introduced some special guests. Heather was a Rotary exchange student to Brazil as a high school senior, and several of her Brazilian schoolmates are visiting Heather to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their year together.
* The Glass is Half Full.... - Our Service Fund stands at $10,000 against a goal of $20,000, with more than 60 members not heard from. The Service Fund allows Utica Rotarians to commit their time and energy to service projects rather than fundraising. Friendly reminder letters are en route; please consider supporting your club as part of your year end giving plan.
* Literacy Update - Our support of the Literacy Volunteers of America tutoring program is paying dividends for adult new reader Asonta and her family. LVA volunteer tutor Florence Wood reported to us at our Friday meeting that Asonta is studying for her citizenship test, and is steadily improving her vocabulary and comprehension. Utica Rotary's generosity has made all the difference for a woman trying to make a better life for herself in her new country.
* Flower Power - The Women of Rotary joined us at Twin Ponds on Friday, and conducted the drawing for their flower raffle fundraiser. President Julie Benincasa (she is familiar with our President Greg) thanked all who purchased tickets for this major fundraiser. The Women of Rotary support many projects throughout our community.
