Pride of Workmanship Honors Five

Last Friday Utica Rotary presented the Pride of Workmanship Awards. The awards were born in Australia in the mid 1970s, and were brought to the Moravia Rotary Club in 1990. Utica Rotary has honored the unsung heroes of the local workplace by presenting Pride of Workmanship Awards annually since 1991. Three recipients are pictured above with President Greg Benincasa - Julie Batson, Marketing/Communications Manager, UCP; Janice Williams, chief compliance officer, Paradigm Consulting; Rosalind (Roz) DavisDay Habilitation Specialist, The Arc. Also ving awards were Karen Gerace, Store Manager for Jay-K Lumber, and Robert Harrad Facilities Manager of Slocum Dickson.

Committee chair John Wolff assembled a team of volunteers that increased the awareness of the Pride of Workmanship award in our community, and brought us five most worthy recipients. Thanks to John and his committee - Sadieann Spear, Mary Lou Reape, Dave Griffith, Peter Vogelaar, Paul Sacco, Sam Rudolph, PP Lou Steppello, PP Stew Williams, and President Greg Benincasa - for their dedication to the future of the awards.

Welcome Dave Drucker....

The introduction of our newest Utica Rotarian last Friday was but a formality. Dave Drucker is already involved as a volunteer at our adopted Columbus School, and he has attended four club meetings this month (raise your hand if you can also make that claim). We thank Catherine McEnroe for proposing Dave as a member.

Dave is recently retired as the Director of the Chenango County Historical Society. An anthropologist by education, Dave is a member of many professional societies relating to the study of culture and society. As a volunteer, he has been a board member for Habitat for Humanity, and is an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Utica. He and wife Mary live in Utica, and have three children.

Please say hello to Dave this Friday.

Welcome Home, Mitzi

It is always a pleasure to bring a past member back into the club. PE Jim Turnbull did the honors last Friday, reintroducing Mitzi Reul as our "newest" Rotarian. Mitzi is pictured above with PP Georgiana Roberts Ide at a Columbus School onsite meeting in September, 2002.

Mitzi came to our club in 1997 from the Rotary Club of Manhattan (Club cartographer PP Andy Alesia tells us that this is a small, finger-like island in the southern part of the state).

In ten years with our club, Mitzi was a volunteer in all avenues of service, and was a district leader as well. From Columbus School to Relay for Life to Special Needs to Youth Exchange to Youth Services to Polio Eradication....you get the idea. Mitzi represented our club and district as the leader of a Group Study Exchange team to Taiwan. Mitzi is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.

Welcome back to Utica Rotary, Mitzi.

Your Opportunities to Make a Difference

Please consider helping with one of the projects listed below. The costs are minimal, and the rewards undeniable!

* Several classrooms at our adopted Columbus School need Rotary Reader volunteers. There is great flexibility in scheduling; some classes prefer visits every other week, and a few would only require a monthly visit. In the past Rotarians have shared a class to accommodate busy schedules. Click here to email Ron Kamp for more information or to volunteer.

* The courtyard classroom at Columbus could use some sprucing. PP Mike Van Strander could use a dozen able bodied recruits to pull weeds and do general cleanup on Friday, October 30 starting at 3:00pm. Email Mike to sign up. With a full complement of volunteers, two hours should do the trick.

* For the next four Friday meetings the Urban Concerns Committee is collecting board games suitable for teenagers. Who knows how many usable board games lie dusty in the attics and basements of Rotary families? Please take a few moments to gather your dormant games that will be treasured by area families.

* MVCC is the place, November 20 is the date for Utica Rotary's 38th Special Needs Holiday Party. The date is a few weeks earlier this year to accommodate the busy calendar of The Arc, celebrating its 55th anniversary this year. Featured entertainment will be The Flame, and volunteers will be needed for table service (no buffet this year). Once again Amy Mielnicki is chairing the event and coordinating Rotary volunteers. Setup begins at 3:00pm, and general volunteers are needed at 5:00pm. Please email Amy to sign up for this flagship Utica Rotary event.
