Utica Rotarians Gather Books for the World

Utica Rotary's Literacy Committee continues to spearhead our club's participation in the Books for the World project of District 7150. Led on the District level by PDG Ward Vuillemot, the program collects and ships children's books to schools around the world. After the books are unloaded, the freight container is put into service as a classroom. Talk about recycling!

Utica Rotarians and friends gathered recently at the warehouse facility of the CNY Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired to sort and pack our latest batch of donated books. Pictured above (l to r) are PDG Larry Calabrese, guest volunteer Elaine Polito, PP Linda Allen, Gail Miskowiec, and Joe Skane.

Book donations for this project are accepted at the Association offices, or any member of our Literacy Committee, JoElyn Wakefield Wright, chair. Our club goal is to fill a pallet with donated books during this Rotary year, and the District is working toward filling an overseas container with donations from around central NY.

Welcome Back, Anne Sullivan

Our newest member is not a new Rotarian....in fact, she is not even a new Utica Rotarian. Anne Sullivan returned to our club last Friday, and was introduced by Paul Sacco.

Anne is a Business Banking Officer at Citizens Bank, where she has worked for the past 7 years. She lives in Utica with her two daughters. Anne is perhaps best known in the area for her service on the Utica Common Council. She has thrown her hat in the ring for this fall's council election. "The reaction to my candidacy has ranged from 'thank you' to 'are you crazy?', but I am excited about the campaign."
