Dues Are Overdue!!

We will be sending our international dues payments to RI this week, so if you haven't paid your annual Utica Rotary dues, please make it a point to remit ASAP. Our "collectors" would rather not have any follow up work, and your payment is necessary to satisfy RI and the district, and to keep our club running smoothly.

Our Support of RBI Program Changes Lives

For the last 20 years the Reviving Baseball in Inner cities (RBI) program has been fighting to bring new hope and fresh opportunities to socially disadvantaged young people across the United States.
Every 26 seconds, one American high school student drops out of school, according to the US Census Bureau. Its an alarming fact, which adds up to not only 1.1 million students dropping out of education every year, but also a national crisis facing the United States. Across the country, approximately 21 million children between the ages of five and 18 suffer from poor quality schools, limited resources, a lack of family support, inadequate nutrition,
the effects of violence and drugs in their communities and little or no emphasis in their lives on the importance of education. The Mohawk Valley is not immune to this problem, and we Utica Rotarians are making a difference in our support of the local RBI program.

Created 20 years ago by Major League Baseball, the RBI currently operates in more than 200 communities nationwide, providing equipment, facilities and coaching, as well as organizing tournaments at both local and national level.
The program is about much more than baseball. By putting educational achievement and personal development at the heart of the program, RBI has played an important role in improving the lives of those who take part.

Thorough our Urban Concerns Committee, Utica Rotary sponsored one of six teams in a new RBI league which is run by the District Attorney's office in an effort to keep kids busy during the summer. All games are played at Quinn's playground on Rutger Street. Other team sponsors are Boy Scouts of America, McDonalds, John E. Creedon PBA, Boulevard Graphics and Poppy's.

A step parent of one of the players conveys what this program means for at-risk kids: "My husband has a 13 yr old boy on his team who was running the streets until 3am, drinking and getting into fights. He showed up to the first game in
his uniform that he had on for 4 days, since it was issued to him. This kid has done a huge turnaround. He still gets into fights but has been going home at night and now has a mentor from MVCC and his mother has even started coming to his games. His skill level, attention level and respect for others has increased dramatically this season. I yelled his name after a nice hit and he turned around and gave me this huge smile. All these kids need is some encouragement."

Thanks to our very active Urban Concerns Committee for its excellent use of our Service Fund dollars.
