Educators Honored This Friday
This Friday marks the 28th year that Utica Rotary will present the Outstanding Educator Awards. Teachers from eight area schools will be recognized at our meeting at Twin Ponds. Our Outstanding Educator Award is a unique recognition in that the recipient is selected by the students, guided by the principles (not the principals) of the Rotary Four Way Test.
The awards luncheon is the culmination of the year's work by our Youth Services Committee. We thank Catherine McEnroe and her fellow Rotarians for their work in organizing visits to our club meetings for area students, preparing for the awards presentation, and selecting the recipient of the Utica Rotary scholarship. Committee members are: President Lou Steppello, Mary Lou Reape, PP Andy Alesia, PP Ralph Imundo, Larry DiCesare, DG Larry Calabrese, Chuck Kershner, Al Zangrilli, PP Dana Jerrard, JoElyn Wakefield Wright, PP Darby O'Brien, Bart Gorman, PP Tom Watkins, Jeff Jones, PP Dave Jones, Angela VanDerhoof, Fran Pugliese, Nick Ide, Kevin Marken, Jeff Wooldridge, Bill Waszkiewicz, and PP Don StLouis.

Former YE Student Laura to Teach in Austria
A young woman named Laura, one of our recent past Youth Exchange outbound students, will teach in Klagenfurt, Austria as part of a program of Fulbright Commission (the provider of the famous Fullbright Scholarship). She participated in Rotary YE during the 2004-2005 academic year, in Bonn, Germany, hosted by the Bonn/Bad Godesberg club. Laura will be graduating from Carleton College in mid-June, with an English major and a German minor. Laura writes:I will be teaching in two secondary schools in the city of Klagenfurt, in the province of Karnten (southern Austria). The teaching assistants help in the classroom as native English speakers, sources of information on "the American way of life" and as representatives of the U.S. I will be working for the coming academic year, October-May, assisting teachers with about 13 class hours per week. This program is administered by the Austrian American Educational Commission (Fulbright Commission) and is financially supported by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, the Arts and Culture (so it's not one of the official Fulbright scholarship programs). For more information please click here to look at the Austrian American Educational Commission' website.
Our Youth Exchange weekend is June 4 through June 7. We will be hosting 30 or so exchange students from around the world, and are still in need of host families for the weekend (basic responsibilities - bed and breakfast). This is a great opportunity to meet these young men and women from around the world. Please see PP Jack Altdoerffer (click here to email Jack) if you can lend a hand.

PASTAMANIA!!!
Pastamania 2009, to support yoot programs for both Utica Rotary and the Greater Utica Sunrise club, is drawing near. Next Monday, May 18 is the day when Rotarians sling sauce for service.Jeff Jones has been feverishly selling tickets, table sponsorships ($100, includes 8 tickets), and placemat placements ($50 gets your business card displayed on more than 300 mats used throughout the evening). Utica and GUS Rotarians will be working side by side to put a smile on the faces of our customers. Veteran volunteers are ready to help: Angela VanDerhoof is coordinating the evening's takeout service, and PP Gib Jones has not only stepped up to the plate, he and his backroom dish crew will scrape, wash, dry and store it.
Utica Rotary's share of the take will support the project "It Takes a Man to be a Dad". This initiative to strengthen families is supported by our District 7150 and many area clubs.
