Rotarians, Friends Support Landmine Clearance Project

More than 80 Rotarians, family members and friends of Rotary gathered at the Yahnundasis last Friday in support of the 2009 Rotary/HALO Landmine Clearance Project in Cambodia. Event co-chairs PP Georgiana Roberts Ide and PP Dave Jones kept the evening moving smartly, and the featured speakers presented encouraging information about landmine removal throughout the world.

After a superb meal of authentic Cambodian and Vietnamese delicacies, Kurt Chesko of HALO Trust (USA) spoke of the landmine removal progress made in many areas of the world in the last ten years. All the trends are positive; many mines have been destroyed, deaths and injury resulting from mine explosions are decreasing, and support of removal programs is growing. The project we are supporting is to demine an area surrounding a village in northwest Cambodia, a country where people work in known minefields to provide for their families. Along with our Rotary partners in Seattle and Victoria, Australia, and through a generous match from the US State Department, a total fundraising goal of $45,000 has been set.

Charles A. Stonecipher, Program Manager for Cambodia, U.S. Department of State, spoke of the financial support of his department for demining operations, and the changing policies of the US government regarding the use of landmines. "Smart mines" that are easily detected by sweepers, and/or permanently deactivate after a period of time currently remain part of the US arsenal. This is the second year that the State Department has matched funds raised for this project.

A Utica Rotarian who was a leader in bringing landmine awareness to the club is our sitting District Governor Larry Calabrese. Governor Larry spoke of the many projects underway in our district that serve to Make Dreams Real. A free path to the next village or a small field for keeping cattle or raising food may not seem like much to us, but for many it is a dream that will be realized upon completion of the landmine clearance project.

Thanks to those Rotarians and friends who walked the talk - PP Georgiana, PP Dave, DG Larry, PP Dom Passalacqua, PP Dana Jerrard(and his orchestra),Nick Ide, Tina Passalacqua and Ingrid Otto Jones. Check in future editions of The Hub for fundraising totals and project reports.
