A Chance to Make A Real Difference

On Friday evening, April 24, Utica Rotary will write the next chapter in its support of a landmine removal project in Cambodia. Five years ago PP Dave Jones opened our eyes to the need of landmine removal in the world. Joining Rotarians in Australia and Seattle, and with the guidance of the HALO Trust and the US State Department, Utica Rotarians have financed the removal of more than 500 landmines and unexploded ordinance - weapons that will never harm, maim or kill. While we can all feel good about the effectiveness of our support, there is more work to do.

At our dinner on 4/24 we will welcome two speakers who are intimately involved with the Cambodia project. Kurt Chesko of HALO Trust (USA) will return to give us an update on HALO's demining work throughout the world, and in our project in Cambodia. Also, Charles A. Stonecipher, Program Manager for Cambodia, U.S. Department of State Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement, will provide details on the support that the US government is providing worldwide to identify and remove unexploded weapons. The State Department has matched our donations over the years and will continue this financial support, allowing us to leverage our investments in this demining effort.

Our goal for the evening is to generate every dollar possible for landmine removal. In addition to the 1:1 match from the State Department, Utica Rotary's International Service Fund is underwriting the cost of the dinner, so every dollar contributed that night will be doubled, and directed toward the demining project in Cambodia. A minimum contribution of $40 per person is suggested, but of course you are welcome to give more! Your support of this project will also entitle you to a place in our grand prize drawing, with items such as timeshare weeks, Nick Ide original framed photos from Antarctia and South America, and an evening of laughs with PP Dana Jerrard to be won.

Landmine casualties have dropped from about 9,000 per year to 5,000 per year as this program has grown. There is no question that our participation in this program has literally saved life and limb. This gives us reason to celebrate, and at the same time to increase our efforts to do even more.

Please "walk the talk" with PP Dave Jones, PP Georgiana Robers Ide, PP Dom Passalacqua, and District Governor Larry Calabrese. Join us for an evening at the Yahnundasis, welcome our guests Kurt and Charles to Utica, and support a project that change lives.

Exchange Students Challenge Rotary Bowlers

It is a non-Olympic year, but that doesn't mean that there are no high profile international sporting events. In fact, Utica will be hosting an athletic challenge with participants from Europe, Asia and South America, in addition to a talented US squad.

On Tuesday, April 21, from 7-9 pm, the Pin-O-Rama in Utica will host a bowling challenge, with select District 7150 Youth Exchange students challenging the grizzled veterans of the Rotary Bowling League. Pam Matt is the honorary captain of the Yoots, and Mary Lou Reape, Rick Holohan, and JoElyn Wakefield-Wright will try to keep the Rotary bowlers in line.

All are welcome to come on down and witness these finely tuned and highly toned athletes in action.
