Landmine Awareness Event Approaches
Five years ago, PP Dave Jones asked our club to consider a joint project to eliminate the scourge of landmines and unexploded ordinance in the world. Utica Rotarians enthusiastically joined a partnership with Rotarians in Seattle, other Rotary Clubs in the US and Canada, and the HALO Trust, a professional demining organization. We joined a groundswell of awareness first begun by the late Princess Diana of Wales, and spread by a dedicated group of volunteers. With matching funds from the US State Department, our club has generated more than $50,000 for mine education and removal, and we're not done. Our Landmine Awareness Dinner Event is fast approaching - Friday, April 24 beginning at 6:00pm at the Yahnundasis Golf Club. Utica Rotary's International Service Fund is underwriting the cost of the dinner, so every dollar donated that night will be matched by the US State Department, and directed toward a demining project in Cambodia. A minimum contribution of $40 per person is suggested, but of course you are welcome to give more!
Landmine casualties have dropped from about 9,000 per year to 5,000 per year as this program has grown. There is no question that our participation in this program has literally saved life and limb. This gives us reason to celebrate, and at the same time to increase our efforts to do even more.

Rotarians Collect Books for the World

Editor's Note: Because of shoddy fact checking by our Commercial Drive Bureau Chief, the lead article in last week's issue of The Hub contained several misstatements. The Rotarians pictured were not receiving donated supplies, but were in fact preparing donated books for shipment overseas. The Hub enjoyed the confusion caused by these mistakes, and those interns responsible have been sacked. Our club Literacy Chair, JoElyn Wakefield-Wright, has submitted corrected copy for this article.
Members of Rotary District 7150 recently sorted and boxed used textbooks collected for "Books for the World." They will now be shipped to the Republic of South Africa for distribution by South African Rotarians for use in schools. Seventy two cartons of donated books were picked, packed and palletized one recent Saturday morning. Thanks go to those who lent a hand: Jim Collis, DG Larry Calabrese, PE Greg Benicasa, Hal Brown, PDG Ward Vuillemot, P Lou Steppello, VP Jim Turnbull and JoElyn Wakefield-Wright.

Welcome, Heather and Wayne
Two new Utica Rotarians were introduced to the club last Friday by their sponsors:Heather Moksness is no stranger to Rotary or its programs. She spent a year studying in Brazil as a Rotary Youth Exchange student, and is currently an advisor to the program. She is a third generation Rotarian, and her mom is a past president of the Madison/Oriskany Falls club. Heather has lived in Norway (birthplace of husband Bjorn), and is fluent in Norwegian and Portuguese. The Moksness own and operate the Galleria Cafe right down the street from our Friday meeting place.
Wayne Baran has returned to the Mohawk Valley, his childhood home. He is Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club in Utica. He has spent many years in education, most notably in the Syracuse school system. In his comments to his new fellow Rotarians, Wayne spoke of youth programs with energy, enthusiasm and commitment. He will surely be a valuable addition to our youth volunteer base.
We thank PP Ralph Imundo and Eve Van deWal for proposing our new members. Make it a point to introduce yourself to Heather and Wayne at our meeting this Friday.
