Utica Rotarians Receive Relief Supplies

Inbound shipments from around the world part of RI's USAid Program

Utica Rotary has received its first shipment of relief supplies as part of Rotary International's USAid Project. USAid, the brainchild of RI President Dong Kurn Lee, encourages the countries of the world to collect and ship unused items to the US in its time of economic distress.

"They could, and they did!", beamed DG Larry Calabrese as he examined the first pallet of goods to arrive, 30 rolls of mosquito netting from Botswana. "Rotary has always been, and always will be about serving those in need, regardless of where they might live." Other items received included 1200 freeze-dried field rabbits from Iceland, a box of VHS video tapes of the 1970s TV series "Welcome Back, Kotter", dubbed in French, and a large cardboard container filled with East German 500 mark notes.

Some Utica Rotarians had mixed feelings about the program. "The espresso machines from Sicily were a nice gesture, but I'm not sure this is what Paul Harris and the founders of Rotary envisioned," said JoElyn Wakefield Wright.

Other area clubs have also been served by this program. The Greater Utica Sunrise Club recently received a 1964 Checker taxicab from Mexico and 10 tons of Brazilian sugarcane. To date, more than $30 million in goods has been donated to US Rotary Clubs for distribution throughout the 50 states.

Please call President Lou to express your interest in any of the items we've received.

Yoot on Stage This Friday

The internationality (is that really a word?) of Rotary will be in great evidence this Friday as we welcome our area's youth exchange students. Our club's Youth Exchange officer, PP Jack Altdoerffer along with long time YEO Shawki Elgarhi have assembled a program that will show Rotary at its finest. This is a perfect opportunity for you to "show off" Rotary to a prospective member.
