A Poem....

The codfish lays ten thousand eggs,
The homely hen lays one;
But the codfish doesn't cackle,
To tell what she has done.
And so we spurn the codfish,
While the humble hen we prize;
Which only goes to show you,
That it pays to advertise!

Quietly Walking the Talk

District Governor Larry Calabrese has asked us all to "walk the talk" during this Rotary year when it comes to serving others, supporting Rotary programs, and making a difference in our world. Our club has many members who have devoted time, talent, money and energy to new and existing projects. Here are a few thumbnail sketches of some recent programs:

Steve Gassner and Connie Schreppel are key players in a district water project in the Dominican Republic. An elementary school serving more than 350 students has a contaminated well, about 6 hours of electricity per day, and no provisions for storing clean water. The district group has raised 75% of its $12,000 goal to provide a uv filter, backup generators and storage tanks for the school. If the additional $3,000 is raised shortly, the work will be done during the week of April 14.

PDG Don Reese has traveled to Chile, and is evaluating a project that would provide and install playground equipment for the special needs population.

Our recent Pennies for Polio drive, led by Gail Miskowiec brought in more than $1200. We have exceeded our goal for year 1 of our 3 year plan to provide matching funds for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant to RI of more than $200 million to finally eradicate polio.

A Rotary Community Corps is a Rotary club-sponsored group of non-Rotarians who desire to help their own community by conducting improvement projects. The Rotary members provide the guidance, encouragement, organizational structure and some of the material assistance for the Rotary Community Corps, which in turn contributes the manpower to help their own community. Utica Rotarians Angela VanDerhoof, Gail Miskowiec, Rick Sebastian and Sheila Knapp are working to form a Rotary Community Corps in our local special needs community. Supporting local agencies include The Arc, Human Technologies Corporation, and the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

A public relations campaign on the value of fatherhood is being created as a joint project of Utica Rotary and four other area Rotary clubs - Greater Utica Sunrise (Claudia Hartz, president), North Utica/Whitestown Rotary (Herb Sipp, president), New Hartford Rotary (Chuck Tomaselli, president) and Sauquoit Rotary (Randy Wilson, president).
