A Lasting Impression

We heard last Friday a brief history of Utica Rotary's involvement in international service, presented by Rotarian Marty Brown. Marty spoke of 1950-51 club President Fred Schwender, and his ability to encourage the club to learn about our world through Rotary. Marty's enthusiastic presentation showed us all that PP Fred's legacy lives on in Utica Rotary's leadership role in programs like Youth Exchange, Group Study Exchange, and projects with India, Brazil, Romania, Albania, and many more.

PP Don St Louis Receives Fifth Paul Harris Fellow

On Friday we honored a Rotarian who has been a club and district leader for more than 40 years. PP Don St Louis received his fifth Paul Harris Fellow recognition, presented by fellow Rotary Class of 1968 member Joe Skane.
PP Don is our club's "go to guy"; anyone with a question about a Rotary procedure, project or club history is invariably directed to Don. His involvement spans the avenues of Rotary service. He was a founding father of today's Special Needs committee, was instrumental in our club's highly successful Polio Eradication efforts over the last 25 years, was the founder of the Early Act service club at Columbus School, has chaired a Rotary Foundation committee that has raised more than $250,000 from our club, has served as a club director, district conference chair, and District 7150 Assistant Governor. He is also the organizer of our holiday outreach programs, including meal deliveries and bell ringing.
It was most appropriate that Don was honored on a day when the program was presented by the "veteran" Utica Rotarians - Gib Jones (61 years of service), Marty Brown (59 years), Jack Dale (58 years), Reg Wooldridge (56 years), Bill Rotton (46 years) and Joe Skane (41 years).

Sixty Years Ago This Week.....
The following appeared in The Hub, volume 33, number 34, published 60 years ago this week (February 24, 1949):GOVERNMENT MAKING THE EFFORT
The matter of our natural resources and their proper conservation is one of great concern to those in authority in most instances, with government agencies doing their best for cooperation. Of course, there are some more interested in the development of private interests such as hydroelectric power, than in protecting what we have and restoring what has been wantonly destroyed.
Professor Ralph G. Unger of the College of Forestry, Syracuse University, was heard interest last week with his explanation of the efforts made to train men for competent leadership in the matter of conservation. "Forests for Tomorrow"served to outline somewhat the damage that has been done and the opportunities offered to rectify it. Outlined too, were the helps for the land owner. The saving solution seems to be an acceptance of the help available.
