DG Larry a UC Hall of Famer

Utica Rotarian and District 7150 Governor Larry Calabrese has been elected to the Utica College Hall of Fame for his contributions as an athlete and supporter of the college.

DG Larry is sixth on the all time basketball scoring list at UC, and his 45 point performance against RIT still stands as the single game scoring record. There is no evidence to support the rumor that DG Larry's post game comments to the media included the phrase "I could, so I did."

Congratulations to Rotary's team captain for this great honor.

Friday Meal Pricing Structure to be Changed

For the past 15 years Utica Rotary has held its Friday meetings (and many other club events) at Twin Ponds. Our board of directors has a good relationship with Twin Ponds' management, and over the years we have had excellent service and favorable pricing for our weekly club meetings.

Even though our Friday meeting attendance is up this year, the number of lunches purchased each week remains low, many times less than 30. The income from so few meals will not support the cost of food, staffing, room, etc. for Twin Ponds over the long term.

Beginning with our March 13 meeting, our per meal charge will increase, and Twin Ponds will bill us for a minimum of $400, which represents about 35-40 meals. Our board views this as reasonable, and welcomes ideas from our members on the fairest way to mitigate these costs. We will be raising the cost of meals (charge to be determined), and if a few more members eat lunch each Friday, the minimum becomes a non-issue.

Some of the questions the board has considered:
* Should a nominal charge be levied on "non-eaters" who attend a meeting?
* Should a meeting charge be assessed on all members, regardless of their attendance?
* Are there any ways for us to reduce costs?

Please let your board know your feelings on this subject.

Orb and Scepter Back in Storage

Is it a sign of the economic times, or has our Poet Laureate contest run its course?

I am sorry to report that the Poet Laureate contest scheduled for Thursday, February 26, has been canceled. With a week to go we have 23 paid and 15 reserved ticket holders, far too few to support the costs of the event. Challengers to our reigning Laureate Norma Montagnino-Gemza have been harder to find than Dick Cheney's hunting buddies.

We may resurrect the contest, or a modification thereof, at a future date. Those who have prepaid for tickets will have their money grudgingly refunded.

Utica Rotary will have a regular meeting at Twin Ponds on Friday, February 27, with a program about a major project in our central NY Rotary district.
