A Six Month Review from President Lou
During the first six months of the 2008-09 Rotary year our club has quietly stepped up to Make Dreams Real. We directed the resources of our club to meet a variety of needs:Columbus School readers, voter registration, Eden Park bingo, donations of food, clothing and other articles to those in need, picnic/fishing derby for the Neighborhood Center, mitten collection/knitting for Columbus School kids, holiday meal delivery, Books for Babies drive, sponsoring and hosting Youth (Yoot) Exchange students, Pride of Workmanship Awards, Adrean Terrace summer breakfast program, hosted Group Study Exchange team from Brazil, host club for the District Conference, Pennies for Polio, Hope House dinner, Urban Concerns Community Garden, Special Needs Holiday Party, Youth Services program at eight area schools, Rotary tennis, bowling and skiing, Salvation Army bell ringing, ARC Day Camp cleanup, Make a Difference Day, formation of Rotary Community Corps in our local special needs community.......
There is so much that we do, and I'm sure that I have missed more than one of our activities. All of these projects are made possible by the energy and commitment of our members, and the money we all give to our club Service Fund. To our members who participated, I thank you; you have "walked the talk", and no doubt have experienced some memorable moments through your Rotary service to others.
The next six months are just as busy. Our average Friday meeting attendance has been 60 members... a nice improvement. I suspect that this increase is not because of my lousy podium jokes, but because of a renewed commitment in Rotary, and interest in our programs, projects and goals as outlined by your club leadership and DG Larry.
Stay involved, or get involved in your Rotary club. Our goal is to make every member a Rotarian. Say "yes" when a fellow member asks for volunteers. Better yet, ask "what can I do to help?" We have the best club in the district, and we want to keep it that way.
Thanks to all who supported our Service Fund drive. Kevin Marken and committee are still trying to close the gap, and we had many generous gifts to the fund this year. Sheila Knapp won our "Make Dreams Real" jacket, and, in a great dose of poetic justice, Jim Turnbull was the winner of the weekend at the Mirror Lake Inn. He certainly deserves the break.
Cal Coolidge is credited with one of my favorite quotes - "You are remembered not for what you get, but what you give." Nowhere is this more evident than in the Rotary clubs of the world. Wear your Rotary pin with pride.

Four Weeks to PLXV

More than 30 of you have made reservations for the 15th Annual Utica Rotary Poet Laureate Contest on Thursday evening, February 26 at the Fort Schuyler Club. Reigning Laureate Norma Montagnino-Gemza stands ready to defend the Golden Orb and Scepter emblematic of Utica Rotary poetic supremacy. The top notch poetry will be supplemented by the keyboard stylings of local legend Carleton "Knuckles" Boone, and the mostly misplaced merriment of co-hosts Mary Lou Reape and Dana Jerrard. The Steamed Panel of Judges is being recruited under a shroud of secrecy by Chief Judge Maria Pavelock.
Your $33 ticket entitles you to a Fort Schuyler feast and a full evening of fine arts entertainment (let's hope Utica Rotarian Bob Mortis is sitting down as he reads this sentence). Tickets are on sale this Friday at Twin Ponds. You may also click here to email your ticket request to PP Dana.

Items of Interest
Congratulations to our recently elected officers and directors for the 2009-2010 Rotary year. President:Greg Benincasa; President-Elect:Jim Turnbull; Vice President:Jeff Jones; Secretary:Dana Jerrard; Treasurer:Ken Williams Five Directors elected to three year terms beginning July 1, 2009: Pam Matt, Gail Miskowiec, Bob Mortis, Mike Van Strander and Jeff Wooldridge. "The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands" is the RI theme for the upcoming year, and in that spirit we can certainly say the the operations of Utica Rotary will be in good hands during 2009-10. We thank all those who made the commitment to serve their Rotary club as a candidate for office._______________________________________________________________
PDG Don Reese will be on a Rotary service mission beginning February 5. He will fly to Chile to examine a possible matching grant between the Utica Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of San Joaquin La Serena. The purpose of the visit (and of the matching grant) is to determine the feasibility of constructing playground equipment for handicapped children in that city.
La Serena is about 250 miles north of Santiago, directly on the Pacific Ocean. PDG Don will return on February 17, and report to us on this potential international service project. Safe travels, PDG Don.
