A Binding Proposition.......
District 7150 has announced the birth of the District 7150 Books for the World Project. Thanks to the efforts of some very dedicated Rotarians, the support of the District Literacy committee and a community minded shipper, we are now ready to support all district club's efforts in this project to bring the gift of books and literacy to the children of third world countries. What is it? - Books for the World is designed to be collaborative effort among Rotary Clubs, their affiliated youth clubs, and other community and service organizations to provide childrens K - 6th grade picture/story and textbooks to regions in the world that are in need of these materials to create a opportunities for better way of life. The initial focus and book shipments will go to the Rotary District 9300 Distribution Center in Johannesburg Republic of South Africa to be distributed to countries in the southern regions of Africa, where English is one of the primary business languages.
The District 7150 Books for the World committee provides each participating club(s) with general book types and descriptions, packing materials (at cost) along with instructions and delivery information to a central marshaling warehouse location in CNY (Lasertransit). As boxed books are received they will be weighed, palletized and wrapped for shipment to Rotary Books for the World located in Houston Texas. In the Houston location they will be combined and containerize with other donated books and shipped to the District 9300 Distribution Center in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa.
Where are these books currently hiding? Probably somewhere in your house - closets, book shelves, as well as the storage areas of libraries, schools and churches. By combining these resources, we have give these books a fresh start, and make a significant difference in the life of the children of the world.
Utica Rotary's lead volunteer for this project is our club soprano, JoElyn Wakefield Wright, who encourages all members to search the nether regions of their homes for children's literary treasures. We will have more information about collecting the books for shipment in an upcoming issue of The Hub.

DG Larry A Surrogate for PP Georgiana
Audrea Holmes' class at Columbus School will receive a special Rotary visitor during January, February and March of 2009. Our District Governor, Larry Calabrese, will "walk the talk" when it comes to Rotary service and volunteer his time for Ms. Holmes' students.DG Larry will be substituting for Rotary reader PP Georgiana Roberts Ide, who along with Nick will be headed for places less icy during the winter months. PP Georgiana will stay in touch with her adopted class through electronic "Travel Grams" from the road.
Our District Governor has devoted more time to Rotary and the 47 clubs in our district than anyone else during this Rotary year. His volunteering at Columbus is a true testament to his commitment to Rotary service.
How have you served your club lately?
