Rotary Potpourri
- Saturday, December 20 is our day to ring the bell for the Salvation Army. This year we will be inside Chanatry's Supermarket on French Road in Utica. Jeff Jones will have the signup sheet at this Friday's meeting.- The Women of Rotary are conducting their Flower's Galore raffle. Those of you in the spousal dog house will be interested to learn that first prize is a $400 credit at Chester's Flower Shop. The drawing is Friday, December 19 at Twin Ponds. Tickets are available at our Friday meetings, or from any Women of Rotary member.
- The bus for the January 15 ski trip is more than half reserved, so if you have a desire to hit the slopes with your Rotary friends, get your $20 deposit in to John Burdick today.
- About a month remains in our Service Fund drive, and to date more than 70 members have pledged or donated. This represents about half of our club. Only through this fund are we able to finance projects like Youth Services, Special Needs, Urban Concerns, Columbus School, Group Study Exchange, etc. etc. If you haven't made your pledge, please join your fellow Utica Rotarians in supporting our club projects.
- Two new members joined the ranks of Utica Rotary last Friday.
Sheila Knapp is a program director at Upstate Cerebral Palsy. She is a long time executive board member of Oneida County Special Olympics, and has volunteered for the Boilermaker (the cleanup crew!) and the Great American Irish Festival. For many years Sheila has been volunteer at our Special Needs Holiday Party (now she will earn attendance credit).
Tom Phelps owns his own marketing, copy writing and consulting firm. He, wife Michelle and their two children live in Marcy. Tom learned much about our organization through a friend who is a Binghamton Rotarian, and when he decided to increase his community involvement, Rotary was the answer.
Thanks to Gail Miskowiec and PP Jack Altdoerffer for proposing these new members, and please say hello to Sheila and Tom at our meeting this Friday.

Special Needs Party A Holiday Hit
More than 500 people celebrated the season at the Alumni College Center at MVCC last Friday night. Utica Rotary's 38th Annual Special Needs Holiday Party featured great food, music, dancing, and miles of smiles. This club tradition began in 1971 as a part of a weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Utica. It soon grew to an evening event at Westminster Church in Utica. With Westminster maxed out, MVCC came to our aid in 1986, and since that time the college has been preparing the food and providing location for the party.
This event is the largest single expenditure of our Service Fund, and it touches the hearts of hundreds. Thanks to Amy Mielnicki for once again chairing this great event, and thank you to our volunteers:
PP Gib Jones, Amy Mielnicki, Chuck Kershner, Fran Pugliese, PP Dave Jones, Angela VanDerhoof, Sheila Knapp, PP Georgiana Roberts Ide, Nick Ide, PP Dana Jerrard, Pam Matt, Catherine McEnroe, DG Larry Calabrese, Shawki Engarhi, PP Mike VanStrander, Gail Miskowiec, Lorina Steppello, Norma Montagnino Gemza, PE Greg Benincasa, P Lou Steppello, PP Don St Louis, Joe Skane
Also, Gary Cummings (MVCC Student), Noah Jones, Gabriele Lebatore, Larry Matt, Tom Matt, Mia DeGeronimo, Jim Gemza, Gladys Skane.
