BOO! From President Lou

A busy month for the members of the Utica Club...

The Urban Concerns non-perishiable food drive is in its final week. Our responsibilities to the Hope House are on-going. During this time of financial crisis the Hope House and its clients are now experiencing the bad side of the trickle down theory. They need us now more than ever.

We have just three more weeks left for our Columbus School mitten drive. November 21 is our targeted end date. The response has been great; keep up the good work as we lend a hand.or at least some covering for cold hands. Volunteers are always needed at Columbus for our in-class reading program, the Explorer honor society, the EarlyAct service club and our courtyard. Please contact PP Dana Jerrard if you can help.

The Pennies for Polio campaign is officially over. All canisters are to be returned to Twin Ponds at this Fridays meeting (November 7th). Thanks to all of our members that participated in this polio fund drive, and special thanks to Rotarian Gail Miskowiec for leading the charge.

Our Youth Services committee has started its program with eight area schools. We welcomed students and the guidance counselor from Sauquoit High last Friday. Thanks to Catherine McEnroe for taking over as chair She will need help throughout the school year with our other seven schools, and with the Outstanding Educator luncheon at the end of the school year. This is a great Utica Rotary program with a long history; yours truly was a wide eyed high school student at a Utica Rotary meeting in the ballroom of the Hotel Utica a few years ago. Walk the talk and contact Catherine to volunteer for this program.

Under the direction of John Wolff and his committee the Pride of Workmanship Awards provided another successful program. We recognized 5 outstanding individuals this year: (from left): Robert La Polt (Chief Information Office-Slocum Dickson Medical Group); Chris Turner (maintenance/sales associate J-K Independent Lumber Corp.); Victoria Hillebrand (Community Recreation director of The Arc of Oneida-Lewis Counties); Connie Schroth (Office Manager at Dimbly, Friedel, Williams, and Edmunds Funeral Homes); and Cary Meltzer (Youth Services Director at Utica Public LIbrary). They represented performance and work ethics consistent with our 4 Way Test.

Wow--- 60 years of Rotary service. Congratulations to PP Gib Jones. A lifetime of serving his community is an astonishing accomplishment. DG Larry Calabrese presented Gib with an official proclamation naming 10/31 as Gib Jones Day in our district. The Utica Rotary club and its members are proud to say thanks to a friend and a Rotarian.
