Pride of Workmanship Awards to Honor Five

For the eighteenth year, Utica Rotary will be saluting the heroes of the local workplace with the Pride of Workmanship Award.

Started 1n 1975 by the Rotary Club of Pennant Hills (Australia, District 9680), the award was brought to the US by the Moravia Rotary Club of our beloved District 7150. Utica Rotary was the third club in the United States to present the Pride of Workmanship. Over the years Utica Rotary has recognized more than 100 workers who "Do it once, do it well, and build a better America," the theme behind the award.

We thank committee chair John Wolff for his work in bringing us the 2008 Pride of Workmanship Awards. Please consider bringing a prospective member to this Friday's celebration.

Welcome, Cheryl

Our newest member was introduced to the club last Friday by Bart Gorman, her sponsor. Cheryl Eldred manages the Genesee St. branch of Key Bank, and is looking forward to getting to know the many familiar faces of her Rotarian customers on another level.

Cheryl is very active with our local Salvation Army, having served as treasurer and a member of the board. She and husband Tim enjoy hitting the road on their Harley (great gas mileage!), snowmobiling and kayaking. Cheryl also enjoys travel, reading and sewing.

Please say hello to Cheryl Eldred this Friday.

What Can You Do?... Ask President Lou!

Very shortly the whirlwind holiday season will be upon us, with many celebrations in store. Despite the hectic schedules that we all have at this time of year, Utica Rotarians continue to devote a their time to helping others. I would like each member of our club to do at least one Rotary service activity before the end of this year, and there is no shortage of opportunities:

Mittens - The frosty mornings are here; lets continue our support for the kids of Columbus School. Our donations/collection of mittens will continue each Friday until November 21st. All shapes, colors and sizes of hand warmers are welcome.

Hope House Food Donations - PP Dave Jones and the Urban Concerns committee is extending its collection of non-perishable foods until Friday, November 7th. Bring your items to Twin Ponds this Friday.

Pennies for Polio - Our campaign will end this Friday, October 31st. Gail Miskowiec reminds all to return all containers to Twin Ponds at this Fridays meeting. Our club goal is $1,000. Thank you to all members who took canisters for placement.

Thanksgiving Meal Deliveries - PP Don St Louis is once again our coordinator of volunteers to deliver hot meals on Thanksgiving Day to those less fortunate than we. Please consider doing this for your community before sitting down with family and friends to give thanks.

Special Needs Christmas Party - Amy Mielnicki and her band of elves are attending to the details of our 35th annual bash, set for Friday, December 5. for the 22nd year MVCC will be our host for the evening. There will be work to do from 3:00pm (setup) to about 9:00pm (clean up), so when Amy asks for your help, reply "What can I do?"

Pride of Workmanship Awards - We will honor five outstanding individuals during our meeting this friday. This is a great program and an excellent time to bring a guest/potential member.

Propose a New Member - Sixteen new members have been proposed to Utica Rotary in 2008. Unfortunately an equal number have left the club in that time, so if we are to meet District Governor Larry Calabrese's goal of 10% membership growth, we need to "Get Our Ask In Gear". Think of a business colleague, customer, vendor or associate who would make a good Rotarian, and fill out a proposal card. We'll take it from there.

Vote - November 4th is next tuesday-dont forget to vote! It would be nice if more people would get out and vote for the leader of the free world than vote for the American Idol!!
