How Do We Do It? Kevin Knows!
Think of anything that Utica Rotary does, and chances are it is supported in some way by our Service Fund. Our new Group Study Exchange friends from District 4570 in Brazil have recently returned home. The October 1 Fishing Derby sponsored by our Urban Concerns Committee was a great success (OK, the group only caught two fish, but everything else was perfect!). The Columbus School Explorer honor society, courtyard, EarlyAct club and reading program are underway. The Youth Services project, happening throughout the school year at eight local institutions and featuring the Outstanding Educator Awards, will begin shortly. Our 35th annual Special Needs Christmas party is set for December 5. The Pride of Workmanship Awards will be given by Utica Rotary for the 17th year on October 31. All these projects and more are only possible because Utica Rotarians support the Service Fund to the tune of more than $20,000 per year.Do you need another reason to give? How about a weekend for two at the Mirror Lake Inn, or one of many other great prizes?
The Service Fund Drive for 2008-09 is looking for the support of all Utica Rotarians. Drive chair Kevin Marken has a goal of a pledge to the fund from each Utica Rotarian. Those members donating the suggested gift of $175 will be entered in the prize drawing. Those pledging at the $200 level will be entered twice! It is our small way of thanking you for keeping our club strong.
Please take a pledge card at our next Friday meeting, or pay online by clicking the "Donate" button on this website. President Lou is asking every member of our club to give what he/she feels is appropriate.
Many thanks to those members who have already pledged their support.

President Lou - "In 1492, Columbus Sailed the Ocean Blue..."
In 1492 Christopher Columbus (or as he would be known as a Rotarian, "Chris"), sailed the ocean blue and gave us a holiday too. So I hope you all had a safe and enjoyable Columbus Day. With the holiday brings central New York a wonderland of beautiful fall colors. The weather has been kind to us as of yet, no need for the Rotary scarves. Our program committee has provided us with a variety of program topics - topics that continue to reach out to our membership. Politics is on everyones mind, and we have had no shortage of timely presentations. We have heard Mayor Roefaro, State Senator Joe Griffo, and more recently congressional candidate Richard Hanna. Mr. Hanna expressed his political views for our future and the direction he will take if elected. Due to the market crisis and a trip to Iraq, Representative Michael Arcuri had to postpone his visit to our club. We will due our best to reschedule him prior to the election.
Assemblymember Roann Desitio is our guest speaker this week. Invite a friend/potential member to listen to her views on the future of our area and New York State. Our attendance for the past 15 weeks has averaged 60 members and guests. That's better than it's been, but we are still missing some of our members on a regular basis.
October is a busy month for us. Urban concerns is asking us to bring non perishable food for the Hope House. Columbus School committee needs mittens for the students. Pride of Workmanship is in the process of receiving nominations for the 10/31 program. Youth Services will be starting soon; we will need volunteers to help with each of the eight area schools participating in the program.
Your continued participation in our club activities is appreciated.
