18th Pride of Workmanship Awards on the Horizon
The Pride of Workmanship Awards were started in the 1980s by Rotarians in Australia. The awards sought to recognize those unsung heroes of the workplace, men and women who exemplified the motto "Do it once, do it right, build a better Australia." Members of the Moravia Rotary Club learned about the program from a Group Study Exchange visit, and brought the idea back to the states (do the Aussies consider us "Up Over?). Ours was the third club in the United States to present the Pride of Workmanship Awards, and the 18th annual awards luncheon is set for Friday, October 31 at Twin Ponds.
John Wolff, awards chair, is calling on all Rotarians to consider submitting a nomination for this year's award. Many nominees are co-workers of the nominator; however, many past winners have been workers who have made an impression through customer service or a vendor relationship.
Click here for the pdf version of the one page nomination form. Nominations are due by Friday, October 10.

A Reminder.....
If you haven't already done so, please email Dana to let him know if you will be eating lunch this Friday. Twin Ponds is offering sit down service as a cost controlling experiment, and it will only work if they have a reasonable guesstimate of the lunchtime crowd.top

President Lou's Fall Debut
September has passed; we are one quarter of the way through the Rotary year and with it comes the chilly air and brilliant colors of Fall. The first quarter has been an active one for our club. Under the leadership of PP Linda Allen, the Columbus School reading program is underway. Readers are still needed to maintain the positive impact we have made at Columbus School. PP Dana Jerrard is chair of the Columbus project committee. He and his team are working on the EarlyAct program, Explorer and Rising Star recognition, and our wonderful outdoor learning center, the Columbus courtyard. There are many opportunities for Rotarians to help at Columbus, and not all of them require regular visits to the school. We will have updates in The Hub in the coming weeks about opportunities for you to help out at Columbus; please consider lending a hand. (Answer to this Friday's trivia question - we are now in our 11th year of service at Columbus School)
PP Dave Jones is continuing his active Urban Concerns role as chairperson. The annual Fishing Derby/Picnic will be held at Lock 20 in Marcy on Wednesday, 10/1 from 1pm to 5pm. This has been a great success for the families, staff members, and Rotary volunteers. Let's all provide a helping hand with the cooking, serving and fishing. See y'all there at 12:30pm for setup.
A major project of our central NY Rotary district this year is Pennies for Polio. Utica Rotarian and 08-09 District Governor Larry Calabrese has asked each club in the district to help Rotary take the final step to wiping polio from the face of the earth. New member Gail Miskowiec will lead our club in meeting our goal of $1000. Our club responsibility is to assist Gail in identifying organizations that will allow collection cans to be set out in their workplaces and public areas. Please contact Gail with your ideas. With a club and community our size, we should have no problem exceeding our goal, but it will only happen with the help of our members (that's you!).
October is Vocational Awareness Month in the Rotary world, and John Wolff is leading our effort as chair of the Pride of Workmanship Awards. See the article in this issue of The Hub for more about the awards. Please consider nominating a member of the workforce who has gone "above and beyond".
