A Warm and Fuzzy Project If There Ever Was One

The Columbus School Partnership has begun a new cooperative intergenerational venture between the Masonic Care Community, The Pines, Columbus School and Utica Rotary. Several residents of Acacia Village and the Pines are knitting mittens and scarves for the children of Columbus School. PP Linda Allen recently met with the knitters to explain the project, only to find that the women had already begun knitting and several pairs of mittens are finished (Shown in the photo are Barbara Cale, Ruth Mead Packer and Dorothy Chadbourne). If like me, you were lucky enough to have had a grandmother who knitted, you know that there is nothing eases the cold of winter like a pair of hand knit mittens. The knitters will be joining us for a special Rotary meeting later this fall.
Please consider participating in this venture. If you are a knitter, I'll be happy to talk with you about joining this project. If you know someone who knits, please invite them to join or give me their name and I will talk with them.
Many thanks, Linda Allen

One Fourth a Review from President Lou
Twenty five of your fellow Utica Rotarians attended the District Conference up at Alex Bay two weekends ago. As I sat through the programs I was struck by how many of our members are true Rotarians.....serving others with no expectation of personal gain. Larry Calabrese, Dave Jones, Jack Altdoerffer, Jim Turnbull, Georgiana and Nick Ide, Bob Stronach.... all are taking leadership positions at the district level in addition to their Utica Rotary activities. I was proud to be a member of this club, and more proud to be its president.Believe it our not, as of Friday we are 25% of the way through this Rotary year. If Rotary gave out first quarter report cards, what would yours look like? Would you be a Columbus Explorer, a Rising Star, or a RINO (Rotarian In Name Only)?
Our club offers many opportunities make our world a little bit better, and you can devote whatever level of time or resources you feel is appropriate. Can't spend endless hours on our Youth Exchange program like Shawki Elgarhi? Why not invite one of our students to a family activity. Don't have the time to recruit volunteers for our annual Special Needs Christmas party like Amy Mielnicki? You might spend one hour working on the setup crew for the December 5 bash. Can't work on Gail Miskowiec's team raising $1000 in one week to finally eradicate polio? Surely you can put a Pennies for Polio canister in your workplace to help us raise this money one piece of change at a time. And every member of our club knows a friend or business associate who might make a good Rotarian. Proposing him or her is as easy as one phone call, mouse click, or email.
I ask all Utica Rotarians to DO SOMETHING OF SERVICE during the second quarter of our year (through 12/31/08). We are 140 strong, but the 80/20 rule is alive and well among our membership. To continue to be the best club in District 7150 we need the ideas, energy and resources of all members.
If you haven't participated in your Rotary Club for awhile, MAKE THE PLEDGE to join your fellow Utica Rotarians in serving others. No contribution is too small, and the rewards are everlasting.

Spare Me Your Excuses....Join The Fun!!
A Utica Rotary team is still looking for 1 new member of our bowling team. We are looking for someone who wants to have fun, not a "bowler" necessarily. If you have thought about it, give it some more consideration. We bowl on Tuesday at Pin-O-Rama starting 9/30 at 5pm. See Rick "Question Authority" Holohan if you are interested.top
