Brazilians Hit the Ground Running
The Group Study Exchange Team from District 4570 in Brazil arrived in our area on Friday, and Jim Turnbull and the GSE committee have planned a full week of touring, professional meetings, and fun with Rotarians. The team spent Saturday afternoon at NY Mills High School, watching the Notre Dame Jugglers and New York Mills Marauders in a display of American football. It's a good bet that no member of the team has watched a football game where the winning side scored 59 points.
The team also toured the school, and found a reminder of home in the library. Hallways lined with lockers were an unusual sight for the team (not typically found in a Brazilian school), and team members were able to play some basketball in the Mills gym, and rehearse a few show tunes on stage in the auditorium.Saturday night found our guests at the beautiful Stanley Performing Arts Center for an evening with the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. After Sunday morning church services, the team headed to Bill and Tina Waszkiewicz' camp, where each member received a baptismal dunking of a different kind, an introduction to water skiing in the cool depths of Oneida Lake.
This week our Group Study guests will tour Utica, Rome and the Adirondacks, spend a day in individual vocational tours and meetings, and ride to Alexandria Bay for our District Conference.

District Rotarians Headed Up the River
More than 400 Rotarians, spouses, guests and friends of Rotary will head to Alexandria Bay this Friday for the 2008 District Conference of our governor, Utica Rotarian DG Larry Calabrese. Co-chairs of the event, PP Georgiana Roberts Ide and PP Dom Passalacqua have spent more than a year of planning and making arrangements for a memorable Rotary experience. In addition to a dose of Rotary fellowship, Utica style, the weekend will focus on literacy from birth through adulthood, Polio Eradication, clean water and Rotary's international projects. Both our Youth Exchange inbound students and our Group Study guests from District 4570 in Brazil will be in attendance, and making presentations at the conference. When The Cat's away, the Rotarians will play, and that rapscallion PP Andy Alesia will take charge of the meeting at Twin Ponds this Friday. Our guest speaker will be that purveyor of pithy programs, Utica Rotarian Mike Evans, who will debunk some of the myths surrounding reverse mortgages. Your attendance this Friday could save you from a mistake costing you a chunk of your assets!

I'm On a Drinking Team With a Bowling Problem...
The nights are chilly, the leaves are turning and Rick Holohan is pulling his Ebonite Gyro out of mothballs. This can only mean that another season of Rotary bowling is upon us.This once-a-week session of great Rotary fellowship and not so great athletic achievement has been a staple of our club for more than 50 years. League refreshment coordinator Mary Lou Reape has decreed that the official beverage of the 2008-09 season is Saranac Pomegranate Wheat beer in aluminum cans. Aside from that, there are very few rules that govern league play.
The great thing about being a Rotary bowler is that you don't have to be good at bowling. League stalwart and The Hub bowling reporter Rick "Hot Lips" Holohan proudly carries a 120 average which he has parlayed into championship trophies by incorporating a system of sand bags that would rival those used by Lousianans to stop Gustav.
If all this appeals to you, consider joining the league as either a team member or sub. Mary Lou or Rick would be happy to give you more information, or sign you up!
