Utica Rotary Recognized at District Changing of the Guard Dinner

More than 200 District 7150 Rotarians, spouses and friends of Rotary packed the conference center at the Turning Stone Resort for the district's annual Changing of the Guard dinner, marking the end of the 2007-2008 Rotary year. Utica Rotarians DGE Larry Calabrese, P Ralph Imundo, PE Lou Steppello, VP Greg Benincasa, VPE Jim Turnbull, IPP Jack Altdoerffer, PP Dana Jerrard, Shawki Elgarhi, Norma Montagnino Gemza, and district PR chair Bob Stronach were in attendance. It was the swan song for former Utica Rotarian and District Governor Marlene Brown, who handed the ceremonial gavel to current Utica Rotarian Larry Calabrese, District Governor 2008-2009.

Keynote speaker for the evening was Rotary International President Wilf Wilkinson, who spoke of his meetings with world leaders during his year as leader of the Rotary world. These were far more than ceremonial calls; RI President Wilf encouraged Pakistan's president Musharraf to make a commitment to polio eradication....and follow through. President Wilf joined Rotary in 1962, and saw the power of Rotarians to affect change when he attended the 1963 RI Convention in Toronto (in his home Rotary district). He was especially taken by the words of soon-to-be Canadian Prime Minister Lester Pearson, who said "peace will reign when the people of the world simply meet." The links to Rotary were obvious to President Wilf, who in 46 years in Rotary has traveled the world in Rotary service..

The event also served as the club recognition and awards ceremony, and Utica Rotary grabbed its share of hardware. We received the Presidential Citation for excellence and balance in all areas of our club. Utica Rotary was also recognized for membership development, significant achievement (community projects), and newsletter/public relations.
