Something's Fishy with Urban Concerns.
by PP Dave Jones
It was a day to be remembered, by over 50 clients and staff of Thea Bowman House and the Neighborhood Center programs. Our Urban Concerns Committee coordinated a recent midweek afternoon of fun with the sole purpose of exposing inner city families to outdoor healthy activities close to home. We met at Lock 20 in Marcy on one of the most idyllic days of the year. It was sunny, 80 degrees, a light wind, no humidity or bugs, and yes the fish were biting!
A spacious pavilion graces the picnic area on Lock 20. It was built in 1995, all by private donations, and is now maintained by Midstate Correctional Facility inmates providing a convenient escape to a beautiful park setting. None of the children from the Neighborhood Center had ever fished before so the excitement of screams echoed through the park with every nibble. The badminton net was active with games for those with limited patience for fishing.
Volunteer Rotarians capped off the afternoon by serving grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, cookies and chips all donated by Sodexo food services. Many thanks to Eve Van deWal and husband Dale, Nick and PP Georgiana Roberts Ide, PP Jack Altdoerffer, Rick Sebastian, Sadianne Spear, Michelle Synakowski, and Virginia Barney. Both parents and staff from the programs expressed their gratitude to my Rotary brothers and sisters as we cleaned up and departed wondering how our next outdoor adventure can possibly top this perfect day!
