- Shawki is King of Youth Exchange -
Shawki is presented with his second Paul Harris Fellow by Past President Jack AltdoerfferIt is always a bittersweet moment when a Youth Exchange year comes to an end, and we must bid adieu to a special group of young people from around the world. For the past nine years, the man who has attended to every detail of our local YE program has been Utica Rotarian Shawki Elgarhi.
Youth Exchange is an awesome responsibility. Volunteers, including host families become de facto for these students, many of whom are living away from home for the first time. Coupled with these obligations are many details that must be attended to: travel, school placement, inevitable homesickness, illness, events, housing, etc. etc.
Shawki has seen more than 100 students pass through the program in his tenure. For most volunteers this would have been a great measure of success....but not Shawki. While running Youth Exchange, Shawki also developed a YE consortium of six area Rotary Clubs. The consortium leveraged the resources of every member club, increased the participation of local high schools, and made the program more visible in our area.
Shawki has devoted thousands of hours to Youth Exchange, and has changed the lives of students (both inbound and outbound), host families, volunteers and Rotarians. In recognition of his selfless service to others, Shawki Elgarhi was recognized with a second Paul Harris Fellow at our YE Weekend program last Friday.

Holohans Take Full Advantage of Service Fund Prize
Through the generosity of Utica Rotary and Mirror Lake Inn, and the Service Fund, Missy and I were introduced to this wonderful facility this weekend. You don´t need to travel long distances to enjoy a truly wonderful weekend. The Mirror Lake Inn in Lake Placid is the best Hotel/Inn that we have ever stayed at and we encourage you to think about a wonderful relaxing weekend or vacation close to home. Nothing compares to the beauty and comfort of this Adirondack-style inn- wood everywhere, gorgeous furniture, lots of places to sit in comfort and view the lake and goings-on. Our room overlooked Mirror lake. We had two queen-sized really comfortable beds and amenities everywhere. The questions my wife thinks about when we go anywhere, even the Hilton or Sheraton, are will they have hair dryers, ironing boards etc. I found myself exploring the room because everywhere I looked there was something special,-some amenity I didn´t even dream of. The pool was lovely and the toasty Jacuzzi fit about 30 people. (I spent a lot of time in there). Of course there was the sauna, changing rooms with complete showers, and a spa that offers everything imaginable to those who imagine such things. The head chef is from Paul Smith College and oversees three dining areas from gourmet to "soup and sandwich" at the Cottage. My wife´s Portabello "sandwich" was one of the best she ever had. We spent our last evening at the gourmet "The View" where my wife enjoyed "wild" Pacific salmon and I had the pork tenderloin. It was just as wonderful as you would expect or more so. The staff always had a smile and always were asking what they could do for us. It is no wonder, they have garnished a dozen awards over the years for their hospitality, If all that sounds boring, they have paddle-boats, rowboats, a private beach and a host of activities available. Did we mention we were in Lake Placid? My wife´s father once did the "Bobsled" run or , maybe, the Luge interests you or your can watch Olympic skiers practicing or snowboarders landing in the pool after their runs. And the shopping was at places like Van Heusen Izog and Bass as well as the more "Lake Placidy" stores with as much as 80% off, and, if you like, the food is excellent and varied on Main Street where the shops are. Everything is close and modern stuff like TV and VCR are in the rooms if your kids object to the "good life". Lake Placid is about three hours away on some good roads. Why on Earth would you travel further away for the "frantic life" of Disney or whatever when you can have the "good life" and a relaxing time so close to home.Thank you Utica Rotary and Mirror Lake Inn.

Rotary Tennis Caps Competitive Campaign
The Rotary Tennis championship was contested last Thursday night at the Paragon Racquet Club, and the margin of victory was razor thin. Don Kenderdine´s Apaches edged Helen Evans´ Algonquins by a tiebreaker score of 26 games to 24. The competition was keen throughout, with spirited play, death defying leaps, and occasional mild profanity. This Thursday evening the league meets at the Fort Schuyler Club (no shot and a beer for us, bowlers!) for its annual end of season banquet. PP "Glib" Jones will be master of ceremonies.

We Welcome TWO New Members!
The two newest members of our club are no strangers to Rotary.Marilyn Campola was introduced by her sponsor, PP Stew Williams. Marilyn is a native of New York Mills, and has been a certified Nurse Practitioner for more than 30 years.
Marilyn has three children and four great grandkids, and saw one of her daughters transform from a teenager to a young adult as a Rotary exchange student. Marilyn enjoys traveling and "cutting the rug".
Philip Hayne is the new Executive Director of the United Way of Utica and the Mohawk Valley. Phil has been a member of the Allentown, Pa. Rotary Club for more than 25 years, so we will be calling on his Rotary expertise right off the bat. When not doting over his three grandchildren, Phil enjoys fishing and gardening. His sponsor, Angela VanDerhoof tells us that Phil is looking for hands on Rotary work, and is interested in the projects of our Urban Concerns Committee.
Please say hello to Marilyn and Phil this Friday.
