Service
Opportunities Abound
Fall brings the apple
harvest, college football, and many opportunities to
serve through Rotary. This Friday, just prior to our
club meeting, the Group Study Exchange committee will
meet at Twin Ponds to plan for the arrival of the GSE
team from India. The team will arrive in the US in time
for the District Conference on September 28. The team
will be at the eastern end of the district at the end of
its stay, from October 16-21, and our club will host
them for that time. Please come to Twin Ponds at 11:30
am this Friday if you can lend a hand.
For the 37th consecutive
year, Utica Rotary will host a holiday party for those
with special needs. Planning for the party is underway,
and our Special Needs committee is meeting on Friday,
October 5 at Twin Ponds (11:30 am) to plan this bash for
500. All Rotarians are welcome, or see Amy Mielnicki,
event chair, if you can't make the meeting but would
like to volunteer.
Utica Rotary's Urban
Concerns Committee is hosting another family
picnic/fishing outing at Lock 20 in Marcy. PP Dave
Jones or Virginia Barney have more
information.
We are accepting
nominations for the 17th Pride of Workmanship Awards
until October 1. Consider nominating an unsung hero of
the local workforce. The awards luncheon will be held on
Friday, October 26. See Dave Griffith for
more information.

Tennis,
Bowling in Full Swing
That acrid smell you might
detect at our Friday meeting is the liniment used by our
Rotary athletes, who are back on the lanes and courts
for a season of friendly competition. In the early
weeks of the fall campaign our sporting Rotarians will
have their share of stretched hammies, strained quads,
flaming sciatics and tweaked tendons, so please forgive
the liberal application of balms by our heroes. Rick
Holohan, Mary Lou Caskey and their merry band of
keglers meet at the Pin O Rama every Tuesday for some
cold suds and a few games of bowlin'. The Rotary Tennis
League, the members of which actually own their shoes,
meets each Thursday at the Paragon Athletic Center.
Each league has a
substitute list, and always welcomes additions. If you
would like to relive past athletic glory, or just want
to get out for some exercise and Rotary fellowship,
please see Mary Lou or Rick for bowling, or PP Gib Jones
for tennis.

This Friday We
Welcome Author Stan Wilczek

Stan Wilczek is a
local author, whose current work "The Kept Secret" is a
fictional account about terrorist attacks, and much of
the novel takes place in central New York.
Consider bringing a prospective member to our meeting
this Friday.
