District
Heaps Praise on Club
Utica
Rotary Takes Home the Hardware at COG Event

Utica Rotarians were all
smiles as they met outgoing DG Carol Anthony last
Thursday night at the District Changing of the Guard
dinner. From left to right, 06-07 President Jack Altdoerffer, Past District Governor Don Reese, 06-07
District Governor Carol, 07-08 President Ralph Imundo, and former District YEO, YE consortium
founder, club YEO, and 2007 Quiet Giver Shawki
Elgarhi.
At last week's Changing of
the Guard dinner, Utica Rotary was recognized for an
outstanding year of service under the leadership of
PP Jack Altdoerffer. The club earned nine awards,
and the recognition ran the full spectrum of club
operations and service. From membership growth and
public relations, to international service (youth
exchange) and urban concerns (Columbus courtyard), Utica
Rotary was second to none in District 7150. Great job,
PP Jack, and great job, Utica Rotarians.

Summer Breakfast
Update
In an effort to get the
kids of Adrean Terrace even more calcium, your scribe
last week instructed selected Summer Breakfast program
volunteers to each bring 1.5 gallons of milk on the
morning of their service. Volunteer coordinator PP Dave
Jones set me straight, reminding me that "the milk is for
cereal, we're not giving free milk baths." So
volunteers, when you see a cow next to your name on the
schedule, it is a reminder to bring ONE HALF GALLON of
2% milk to breakfast that morning.

PP Mike Van
Strander Awarded
Paul Harris Fellow

A man with nearly 30 years
of service to Rotary was honored last Friday with his
second Paul Harris Fellow. PP Mike Van Strander
was first awarded a PHF in 1988, in large part for his
leadership in our club's record setting Polio Plus
campaign. The focus of PP Larry Golden's
multimedia presentation this time was Mike's
chairmanship of the Columbus School courtyard project.
This $50,000 initiative, seven years in the making, was
only possible because of Mike's never say die attitude,
his persistence in the face of miles of red tape, and
his ability to marshal resources from many sources.
Never a man to rest on his laurels, Mike is thinking
about the next challenge our club might want to tackle;
the very high infant mortality rate here in Oneida
County.
Congratulations, PP Mike.

Four Honored
As Quiet Givers

Roger Breslow and
his committee have done it again. Four worthy
Utica Rotarians were honored last Friday with our annual
Quite Giver Award. Each winner in his or her own way has
served club, community and our world, inspiring others
with their dedication, perseverance, and spirit. These
four just seem to get things done! Congratulations
to Chuck Kershner, Dave Shumway, PP Linda Allen
and Shawki Elgarhi, for leading our club through
your example.
