UTICA ROTARY CLUB
GUIDELINES FOR
SELECTION, APPROVAL & REVIEW
OF HONORARY
MEMBERS TO THE CLUB
General Information:
Honorary
Membership in the Utica Rotary Club is reserved exclusively as a distinction
for distinguished or meritorious service and significant contributions in
the furtherance of Rotary ideals while a member of the Utica Rotary Club
and/or of the community. Honorary Membership is the highest distinction that
our club may bestow on an individual and should be conferred only in
exceptional cases. The term of an Honorary Member is for one Rotary year
(July 1 - June 30) or from election as an Honorary Member through the
following June 30, whichever is longer.
Candidates for Honorary Membership shall:
1. Reside
within or have resided within the territorial limits of the club.
2. Have
distinguished themselves by meritorious service in the furtherance of Rotary
ideals by:
a.) Being
an active member of Utica Rotary Club for 20 or more years and/or
b.) Having
served as President of the Utica Rotary Club and/or
c.) Having
served as an active Committee Chair of three or more committees over
their years of service with the Utica Rotary Club and/or
d.) Having
achieved recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow and
e.) Having
consistently demonstrated the principle "Service above Self" and
f.) Having
demonstrated an ethical lifestyle by living the "4-Way Test"
Or, if the
candidate is or was not a member of the Utica Rotary Club, by:
g.) Having
demonstrated a genuine commitment to Rotary ideals by extraordinary
actions in the community served.
Benefits and conditions:
Honorary
Members Shall:
- Be exempt from payment of
admission fees and dues
- Be considered as an
Honorary Member by RI and counted as such
- Receive the RI publication
- Be entitled to attend all
meetings and enjoy all other privileges of the club
Honorary Members Shall Not:
- Be eligible to propose a
prospective member
- Be eligible to vote on
issues pertaining to the club
- Be eligible to hold any
office in the club
- Be eligible to have any
interest in property of the club
- Be eligible to represent a
classification
- Be eligible to the rights
or privileges in any other club, except for the right to visit any other
club without being the guest of a Rotarian.
Process for Approval:
1. Any Utica
Rotary Club member in good standing with the club for 5 years or more may
propose a candidate, in writing, to the Secretary of the Club. Reasons for
making the proposal and examples of the candidate’s qualifications must be
provided.
2. The
Secretary will verify the factual information contained in the proposal
(items 2a - 2d), and if verified, contact the candidate to ascertain his or
her desire to be considered for Honorary Member status. If verified and the
status is desired by the candidate, the Secretary shall present the proposal
at the next Board meeting.
3. The Board
will review the proposal and vote to approve, disapprove, or table for
further discussion. If approved, the candidate will become an Honorary
Member, effective immediately, and will be so notified by the Secretary of
the Club, in writing.
Process for Review of Honorary Member Status:
1. All Honorary
Members must be reviewed for re-election yearly in May by a review committee
comprised of Utica Club Rotarians appointed by the President of the Utica
Rotary Club.
2. Honorary
Membership status will be continued unless there is a desire expressed by
the Honorary Member to change to another membership category or there are
extenuating circumstances that indicate termination of the Honorary status
is in order.
3. The review
committee will present their recommendations at the June Board meeting.
Honorary Membership status, if continued, will be effective from July 1 -
June 30 of the next Rotary year.
4. Removal of a
person from the Honorary Members’ category must be approved by the majority
of Board members present at the June meeting, providing there is a quorum.
5. All Honorary
members who continue to hold such status will be notified annually of such
by the Secretary of the Club, in writing, following the June Board meeting.
