Discussion of Pond Element - 2-10-04

Mike Van Strander handed out some technical information for developing ponds. The group reviewed it and found it to be comprehensive. The group also reviewed the Planning Input done previously and looked at some possible changes.

1. The pond needs to be enlarged to approx. 11' x 16'.

2. The pond will incorporate a small waterfall to help in the aeration of the water. If the pond depth in the deepest part is 2' then total depth from top of waterfall to bottom of pond will be approx. 4'.

3. There was a lot of discussion of whether the pond will be in ground or above ground. The recommendation from the Planning Input was for the water level to be 32" above ground. No final determination was made on this issue. The major concern here is safety.

4. The pond will have different depths to simulate different environments. If included, the deeper section will be for fish, but fish present some other problems for year around operation.

5. The pond will provide environments for aqua plants, amphibians, insects, and possibly fish.

6. The Planning Input suggested that the pond should not be in the direct sunlight. We had much discussion about this and concluded that the pond should thus be on the S. end of the courtyard.

7. There were some discussions about backing the pool up to the amphitheater and use the increased elevation around the water fall to provide some tiering for seating. This will depend on the design and location of the amphitheater.
